The Real Federación Española de Fútbol was formed in 1909 but despite being founder members of FIFA and UEFA, Spain did not play a competitive international football match until the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp where they won the silver medal.
The first meeting between Spain and Wales came during the 1962 World Cup qualifying campaign following Denmark and Austria's withdrawl, both sides played each other for the right to face the winners of the Confederation of African Football qualifiers.
